Van Vleck House Gardens

Van Vleck House & Gardens was once owned by the Van Vleck family but is now managed as a non-profit community resource. Featuring a public botanical garden of mostly ericaceous plants developed over several generations and boasting numerous hybridized species like rhododendrons and azaleas named for members of their family, Van Vleck is now an accessible community resource with public botanical garden that draws many visitors each year.

Established in 1868 as a country retreat from industrial life, this property still remains an oasis of green within the city. Open daily from dawn to dusk 365 days a year free of charge for public viewing and maintained by an on-staff Director and Board of Trustees with interpretive programs, volunteer opportunities and student activities that demonstrate our ongoing dedication to horticultural study and outreach in our local community.

Van Vleck House & Gardens are an oasis for locals in Montclair to come relax and unwind, featuring flowers, trees, shrubs and even a fairy garden – something for everyone to enjoy during a visit to their gardens! Come stroll through various different gardens while admiring all the wonderful plants labeled with names so you know exactly what each is!

Make sure to set aside time at the garden for yourself and grab something to eat at one of the food trucks set up throughout the day, where a wide range of delicious dishes is served up from different trucks. Plus, there’s plenty of seating to help you relax as you indulge in your meal while taking in its surroundings!
