Howard Van Vleck Arboretum

Three generations of the Van Vleck family cultivated and maintained this picturesque suburban estate, boasting a remarkable collection of rhododendrons and azaleas. Today, this grounds is open to the public from dawn until dusk 365 days a year at no charge to visitors.

Montclair is known for its secret spots, and this gem of Montclair should not be missed by visitors to the area. Situated on a residential property tucked away from sight, you’ll discover yourself immersed in an enchanting sanctuary where birds sing their sweet songs and squirrels playfully rustle through foliage. On weekdays the gardens tend to be empty so that you can take a meandering walk and find peace within.

The Garden features over 65 varieties of Rhododendrons, Azaleas and other flowers perfectly adapted to New Jersey climate. There are also trees, shrubs and ferns as well as benches scattered throughout its landscape for you to sit back and relax on. In addition, children will love exploring its fairy garden while adults can pick up gardening tools or books at its gift shop.

Garden events range from outdoor yoga and animal programs to educational activities for children – please check their calendar on their website for more information!

Joseph Van Vleck Jr. designed and constructed the main house, reminiscent of Mediterranean villa architecture, in 1916. Subsequently in the 1930s his son Howard who had studied architecture but also enjoyed gardening began planting and tending the gardens on the property which later transformed into an arboretum similar to a botanical garden.

Since 1993, following the passing of the last Van Vleck heir, his property was donated to the Montclair Foundation which now maintains and operates the gardens, continuing their growth into what are today beautiful landscapes.

We adore this hidden gem as a spot to relax and take a breath of fresh air. We have spent many an afternoon taking advantage of its beauty; hopefully soon you too can visit and stop to smell the flowers!
