The Howard Van Vleck Arboretum is a 3.5-acre garden located at Montclair Art Museum and was created by horticulturist Howard Van Vleck. It’s free to the public daily without charge.

The Van Vleck Arboretum, once a private estate, is now managed by the Montclair Foundation as both a non-profit community resource and horticultural garden. Over time, these gardens have evolved to showcase various ericaceous species like rhododendrons and azaleas.

Van Vleck Arboretum is an impressive historic site that should not be missed when visiting Montclair, NJ. From its main house to its gardens and horticultural classes at Yard School of Art, there’s plenty to see and do at Van Vleck Arboretum.

Tour the house and then stroll around its grounds for a truly relaxing experience that will have you eager to return again and again.

Montclair is a breathtakingly picturesque area covered in lush flora. You’re sure to want to take some pictures here, and it’s an ideal spot for visiting with the family if you live there or are visiting for the weekend.

They label all their flowers and plants so you know what you’re looking at. Plus, it’s an ideal spot for children to play – even has its own fairy garden!

What makes this place ideal to explore is that it’s free and the grounds are beautifully kept. There are plenty of benches to sit on while admiring all of the flora and fauna.

If you’re into gardening and love learning about plants, this is the place for you! They have an entire section devoted to plants and flowers that aren’t commonly used in landscaping projects.

They boast a fantastic collection of birds and butterflies that you can observe around the grounds. Additionally, there is a small library with books and educational displays for visitors to learn more about flowers.

Gardens offer a colorful combination of perennials, annuals and trees. Additionally, there are various trails to choose from depending on your interests and preferences.

It’s an ideal place for children, as it is free and there is plenty of room to explore. I’ve taken my daughter here several times now and she always has a blast.
