Presby Iris Gardens

Presby Iris Gardens are listed in both the State and National Registers of Historic Places and are affectionately known locally as “The Rainbow on the Hill.” Visitors to Montclair can stroll this attraction during most parts of summer with only occasional rain showers hampering their stroll and enjoy its magnificent array of blooming irises.

The gardens serve as a memorial to Frank H. Presby, founder of the American Iris Society and longtime Montclair resident and hybridizer. After amassing an extensive collection of irises over his lifetime, his later wish was for them to be given to Montclair upon his passing – however Barbara Walther spearheaded efforts to make that dream come true after Frank passed away.

Montclair Town Council, Parks Commission and Garden Club made this dream garden possible through their cooperation and donations from Presby family, American Iris Society Kellogg Gardens and other iris enthusiasts. Iris beds were initially planted in 1927; since then additional plantings have taken place. Now comprising over 14,000 varieties.

Flowers fill this garden in every hue and form, like botanical art. Each bed has a label with details about its irises; individual blooms are identified with name, hybridizer and registration year by the American Iris Society. In bed 5 can be found some heirloom irises – their oldest blooms!

Alongside irises, there are other plants and trees growing here as well as honeybees whose pollinating efforts contribute greatly to their fragrance. Iris gardens also serve as home for honeybees who play an integral role in pollination of flowers – in fact honeybees play an integral role in creating their perfumed aroma!

In May-June, during peak irises season at the gardens, many events take place that cater to visitors, such as lectures from noted speakers and plant experts as well as horticulture classes and workshops to teach how to care for iris beds at home.

Walther House gift shop sells an assortment of iris bulbs, vases and garden ornaments. Additionally, there is an impressive collection of gardening books, specifically related to iris cultivation. An unidentified bag of rhizomes may be purchased for $20; identified irises may also be purchased. Visitors may bring their own picnic lunches and enjoy them in one of several picnic spots around the grounds, which have tables and chairs available to them. Admission to these beautiful gardens is free during their blooming season – for more information contact or visit their website. Volunteer citizens committee manage the day-to-day operations of the garden and welcome any contributions, which are tax deductible. You can support the gardens by purchasing commemorative plaques, benches or trees and even having one hybridized in honor of yourself or someone special for $25,000! Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated! To find out more call 973-783-0928.
