Presby Iris Gardens was established at 474 Upper Mountain Avenue in Montclair NJ to honor Frank H. Presby, local hybridizer and founder of the American Iris Society, while also serving as an educational garden. It remains in operation today.
Iris flowers have long been prized throughout New England since colonial times. Recognized as symbols of both rainbow and fleur-de-lis, these vibrant blossoms often appear in Impressionist paintings.
Montclair, New Jersey’s premier park system features an exquisite display of irises in its garden – over 14,000 of 3,000 varieties bloom during their season from mid-May through June; often known as “rainbow on the hill.”
Iris gardening requires plenty of sunlight and drainage. Rhizomes should be planted at or just below the soil’s surface and watered regularly until their roots take hold. Once overcrowded, iris plants should be divided every three to five years to avoid further overpopulation.
At the Gardens or local nurseries, you can purchase many different irises to add color and interest to your yard or front garden. Irises thrive in sunny environments and are an excellent addition for front yards.
The Bloom Room gift shop features adorable iris-themed gifts and items perfect for gardeners of any kind – it is open Tuesday – Sunday 11am-3pm during blooming season.
The Gardens are managed by both paid and volunteer gardeners who tend to the irises, keep them healthy and strong, work with bees, manage the gift store and conduct educational programs. When they bloom at their fullest potential they become an international attraction that draws visitors from across the nation and globe.
It’s the ideal location for picnicking or strolling as a family. The flowers are breathtaking and so are the views. Plus, there are gift items available from Walther House shop!
Other plants in the garden aside from irises also make an impressive display, including purple weeping beeches, fringe trees, katsuras, stewartias and redbuds. Furthermore, there is even a bee sanctuary featuring seven hives!
Visits to the Iris Gardens are like walking through history: each flower bears a marker identifying it by name, year registered with American Iris Society and hybridizer who planted it.
The Gardens are maintained without public funds, thanks to donors’ generosity. Their efforts have earned several awards.
Any fan of beautiful flowers and historic landmarks must experience this enchanting garden during blooming season – it truly delights!
