Founded in 2015 by Jonathan Echeverry, Paper Plane Coffee Co home-roasts specialty coffee selected from fair green beans with eco-friendly practices. The coffee company’s name derives from its family farm, which is located high in Colombia’s “Paper Plains,” where eucalyptus trees are grown for the country’s national paper company.

A Multi-Generational Love of Coffee

Founder Jonathan Echeverry’s coffee legacy began more than 150 years ago in Santuario, Colombia, where his great-great-grandfather started what would become generations of coffee growers. Now, in the heart of Montclair’s West Orange Village, Jonathan has set up shop and is bringing that same passion to the neighborhood with a curated menu of fresh roasted specialty coffees, loose leaf teas, cocktail inspired pairings, milk based latte art and unique beverage creations.

The newest location of the family-run roasting company is bright, airy and oh-so friendly to patrons looking for a place to sit down and enjoy some good coffee with friends or work at one of the few tables set up in the 800-square-foot shop. A faux living wall, bright murals and a working Super Nintendo station plugged into a TV screen are just some of the intriguing touches that adorn the place.

What’s more, it’s a quaint little spot with an eclectic feel and plenty of locals to interact with. And what’s not to like about an authentic coffee shop that has a great selection of locally sourced products and an awesome staff?

The “Rusky”

As one might expect from a shop named after a coffee soda, the Rusky is a slurpy, limey concoction that packs quite the punch. Made with spicy ginger soda, lime, espresso and a double shot of the good stuff, it’s a refreshing way to refuel before you head back to the office or finish up your day.

And if the idea of sipping a coffee soda doesn’t appeal to you, they have an excellent variety of traditional beverages, too, including lattes, cappuccinos and Americanos. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, they also have a few mocktails for those who prefer their drinks with a little less sugar.

There are also a number of deliciously tart and sweet hot beverages available, too. You can find the classic Yoohoo, a cool coffee soda and even a “Truffle Shuffle,” which is just what it sounds like: a latte spiked with truffle syrup!

But it’s the roasted coffee that truly captures the imagination. The deep roasting aroma isn’t just for your enjoyment, it’s the culmination of all that care and expertise that goes into crafting each cup of coffee. The baristas at Paper Plane Coffee are happy to tell you more about the process and share their favorite recipes.
