When Ruta graduated from Bates College last May with an environmental studies degree, he had big plans to launch Magnify Brewing Company, which would be his first venture in the craft beer business. While working at Baxter Brewing, a small but well-regarded microbrewery near his college in Maine, he learned the ins and outs of the industry firsthand.
During that time, he began to develop tools of the trade, such as the ability to create a detailed business plan and a passion for great beer. He also gained the support of his parents, who believed in him and supported his dream of launching a brewery at such a young age.
But securing a space, license and permits was no easy task. He was turned away at a number of North Jersey locations and had to overcome a lot of barriers before he could get Magnify up and running.
The brewhouse is 7,000 square feet and located off Rt. 46 in Fairfield. It currently houses four 20-barrel fermenters and two large oak foeders (wooden fermenters), and is expected to receive another 20-barrel and 40-barrel fermenters this July.
With the new equipment, Ruta said he will be able to make about 3,000 barrels this year. In addition, he will be able to increase the efficiency of the brew house by 75 percent. He will be able to brew more ales and lagers.
He is looking to expand his line of seasonal brews, which currently includes Floundering Pumpkin, a spiced pumpkin amber ale and Gingerbread Brown, a spiced brown winter ale. They are also planning a few special releases in the coming months, such as 30 Hours Imperial Pale Ale brewed with 650 pounds of peaches and Pollinator IPA, a brew made with 200 pounds of Jersey honey.
Whether you’re in the mood for a beer that tastes like your childhood, a refreshing Sour or a fudgy Stout, Magnify has it all! Founded by 23-year-old Ridgewood native Eric Ruta, Magnify has quickly become one of the most popular craft breweries in New Jersey.
They have a strong cult following in the local area, with people driving from other states to visit their brew house and drink their beers. This is a brewery that is committed to making high-quality, experimental beers.
Its flagship IPA Vine Shine is a dank and piney East meets West Coast style IPA that is smooth and hop-forward, but not too heavy. It’s a good choice for those who are new to the craft beer world or those who want to try a new, interesting style of brew.
Other year-round beers include Low Visibility Pale Ale, which is a light, fruity pale ale that’s a perfect introduction to the craft brewing scene. They also brew Search Saison, which is a funky farmhouse-style ale with a winey flavor and a subtle fruity hop profile.
They also make two seasonal beers, Floundering Pumpkin and Gingerbread Brown, which are available in cans. They are open for tastings and fills Thursday through Sunday.
