The brewing scene in New Jersey has blossomed over the last few years, and many local craft breweries have popped up all across the state. One of the most recent additions is Ghost Hawk Brewing Company, located in Clifton. Co-founders Tom Rachelski and Steve Bauer grew up in the area, and chose Clifton as their location because of the community support they had received. The name of the brewery is also a tribute to Rachelski’s younger brother who died in 2016.
When they first opened their doors, the line for beer went down the block and around the corner. By the time the grand opening and ribbon cutting took place, more than 100 people were lining up to sample the brewery’s creations. The tasting room is a cozy spot and features a full-sized bar with counter seating. On the back wall are stainless steel tanks for wort and fermentation, and everything is lit with soft warm lighting.
After sampling a few beers, I noticed that the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They were able to explain the ingredients and the process behind each beer, as well as offer suggestions on what else might be enjoyed. The beer itself was very tasty as well, and I enjoyed several of them. The brews range from light and refreshing to rich and dark. I would definitely return to visit the brewery again.

The tour is available on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are available on the Ghost Hawk website and must be purchased in advance.
For those who would rather enjoy their beers at home, Ghost Hawk has a retail shop where you can purchase beers in bottles to take home with you. They can also be found at local bars and restaurants that carry their products.
