Big Man’s Brew is a beer made from the passion of one man and his family. After losing his job and struggling to raise his six kids, Don found that the best way to spend time with them was to rekindle his childhood love of brewing. His first attempt was not the perfect brew but it got him back into a hobby that would become an obsession and ultimately a career for him.
In the beginning, Don and his daughter Elizabeth were just homebrewers experimenting with a new style. They were not yet able to get their beers to compete with the competition but, with the help of their father, they became better brewers over time.
Eventually, their efforts caught the eye of a local entrepreneur and they were able to find a small space for their brewery. Their dedication to a craft that is both rooted in tradition and innovative led them to become one of Baltimore’s original craft breweries.
They have since added a bottling facility and a new tasting room and are always working on creating exciting beers that they are proud to brew. They have a number of beers in their portfolio including their signature Big Man’s Brew Hazy IPA, the Big Boy Stout and the Double Bock.
The Double Bock is a rich and robust brew that is crafted with the same rye malt as their Big Man’s Blonde but they add coffee. It is a smooth and easy drinking beer that is just a little bit heavier than their standard Blonde, but still quite refreshing!
With its roasted malts, this beer has a deep dark color and aromas of chocolate and cocoa. The taste is also very sweet and has a lot of those same chocolate and cocoa aromas, along with a light roasty character that gives it a good balance. It has a good amount of carbonation and has a medium body to it as well.
A very nice beer for those who are looking for a stout that isn’t heavy and has a good balance of coffee and honey. Its just not a great beer for me personally, but if you like coffee and want a lighter beer then this may be the right fit for you!
After a couple of sips I noticed that this beer is quite similar to a light lager. It has a 2 finger white head with active carbonation down below in a golden yellow body.
On the nose this beer has a cheap Budweiser type smell with some light barley and sulfur that is just a little less mind blowing than your standard Bud. Its a very light lager and it lacks some of the malt flavors that you might be used to with a normal Budweiser but its a very drinkable beer and has a fair amount of hops.
This is a very drinkable beer and I will give it a try again and see if there is a good change in flavor. The only downfall I can think of is that it isn’t very complex but that is probably just a personal preference and is not the fault of this beer.
