A calming corner is a safe space in which children can go when they are having trouble regulating their emotions. It is a positive alternative to time-outs and provides structure to help kids learn how to manage their big feelings. This calming space also helps them develop stronger relationships with others.
In this episode, we talk about how to set up a calming corner at home, what to put in it, and how to use it. Then we take a look at some of the research supporting the effectiveness of calm down corners for kids.
A corner is a place where two or more walls meet at an angle. It can be an enclave within a larger building or an area of land that is bounded by several other buildings or areas. The term can also refer to a specific location or situation that is difficult or impossible to navigate without making a turn.
The Corner is a superb piece of work. It’s a small part of the story that Simon and Burns would tell on The Wire, but it stands alone just as powerfully as any of the series’ episodes. It’s ferociously written and utterly believable in its depictions of people shooting, snorting, peddling, stealing and lying on a daily basis.
“Then there was a time when I couldn’t do anything but shit,” says KJ in the film’s final moments. It’s a fitting epitaph for this absorbing film about the life of a teenage hustler in the heart of Baltimore.
One of the rare films that blends romance, comedy and drama to create a feel-good movie, Ernst Lubitsch’s The Shop Around the Corner is timeless and delightful. It has been remade into other, less distinguished movies but none of them have quite the same charm or elegance as Lubitsch’s original.
In the end, it’s the characters that make The Shop Around the Corner so special and memorable. Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan are both perfectly cast as the hapless couple who end up falling for each other, but it’s the performances of the supporting actors that make this movie truly outstanding: Frank Morgan as the self-centered Hugo Matuschek; Felix Bressart as his nebbish sidekick, Pirovitch; Joseph Schildkraut as smarmy pimp-du-jour Vadas; and William Tracy as errand boy Pepi Katona that really bring the whole thing together.
