In the coffee industry, “third wave” isn’t just about a cup of joe topped with whipped cream and sprinkles. It’s about a focus on sustainability and a commitment to craft. This focus on quality and innovation is what’s driving the New Jersey scene, and it’s evident by the success of a Montclair shop called Paper Plane Coffee Co.
Opened in 2015, Paper Plane quickly became one of the state’s best coffee shops. Jonathan Echeverry, the owner, describes his shop as a blend of traditional values and third-wave techniques. He recently expanded the original space on Claremont Avenue, which now includes a sit-down cafe and an education hub for coffee.
The new space is a sight to see, with white, yellow and red paper planes speckled on the wall and simple wooden tables scattered throughout. An eye-catching green wall made of faux leaves connects the “Arrivals” area (where you place your order) to the “Departures” area, which allows you to linger over your drink if you have the time or dash out if you’re on a deadline.
In terms of the menu, Paper Plane offers a wide variety of unique coffee drinks, including a few cocktail-inspired pairings. But even more than the creativity of their beverages, what sets them apart is their dedication to sustainable practices and a deep appreciation for the history of coffee.
The roots of the company go back 150 years to Echeverry’s great-great-grandfather, who was an early pioneer on his family farm in Colombia. That legacy is still evident today in the coffee-growing region of Villa Elisa, which produces the beans used by Paper Plane.
Echeverry, who spent summers on his grandfather’s coffee farm in Colombia—which he calls his “Latino Narnia”—uses his experience and his background as a bartender to create innovative coffee creations. But it’s his love for the coffee bean and his heritage that drives the company forward.
Whether you’re looking for a classic drip, a cold brew or an exotic pour-over, the friendly staff at Paper Plane can guide you through your options. And if you’re on the hunt for something extra special, they can also give you their private-label roast that’s made exclusively for the company.
Jonathan and his team make sure to bring the same level of dedication to the wholesale side of the business as they do for their coffee shop, so you’ll never find a better cup of joe than at Paper Plane Coffee. For more information, visit their website or stop in at 194 Claremont Ave. in Montclair.
