Freeman Gardens is a hidden treasure located at the heart of Glen Ridge, initially only intended for residents to use but now cherished by all. Boasting an intriguing history and modern use as a space to gather, enjoy nature and gain knowledge about our world, Freeman Gardens has quickly become an integral part of community life in Glen Ridge.
Freeman Gardens Association is an accomplished group of volunteers dedicated to the upkeep and expansion of Freeman Gardens. Working on developing areas within the garden as well as creating new facilities like vegetable gardens and possible koi ponds, these volunteers are constantly busy working to make improvements within this garden space. Furthermore, they focus on the creation of “rooms”, small themed areas linked by one or more pathways within Freeman Gardens.
Garden gardens feature many different plants, from roses to hydrangeas and lilies – each boasting their own beautiful blooms that can bring joy to all who pass by them.
Vita loves all the flowers in Vita’s garden, especially Rosa ‘Adelaide d’Orleans’ and Cardinal de Richelieu’. She especially enjoys visiting the White Garden which boasts various varieties of white-flowering plants such as delphiniums, lilies, tulips and roses.
May and June in the garden is an explosion of color! Roses adorning its beds are in full bloom with fragrant blossoms; some even return again throughout summer! Additionally, there are other blooming shrubs and trees beyond just roses such as weeping cherry trees, Carolina silver bell trees, and fragrant viburnum near its entrance that add to its vibrancy.
This garden features an eclectic assortment of items discovered throughout its grounds that are preserved in a shed within it, adding another magical layer to this area and making it truly magical for visitors.
This garden is the perfect spot to take the kids, where they can run around on its lush grasses, play on its lawns, picnic on its grounds and gain more insight into its history, including some of its flowers that grow here.
Visitors to the gardens can also get some exercise by strolling along its pathways and relaxing while sipping tea. The gardens are open daily from morning until dusk for public visitation.
Freeman Gardens offer an incredible variety of events, ranging from family reunions and wedding ceremonies, to picnics or social get-togethers with friends.
Visits to the gardens can provide a wonderful respite from city life for several hours, providing something fun for children as well as quiet areas to read or just relax in. There’s even a picnic area, perfect for offering shade during those hot summer days!
