One of Montclair’s greatest treasures, Presby Iris Gardens is both a National Historic Site and an amazing living museum. Situated in the center of town, this breathtaking display of irises is open to the public year-round.
Established in 1927, this garden was created as a tribute to Frank Presby – founder of the American Iris Society and prominent citizen of Montclair. He had amassed an extensive collection of irises that he intended to donate them to Montclair’s newly acquired Mountainside Park but tragically passed away before completing his vision.
The Iris Gardens are divided into 26 iris beds and four fence beds. Each iris bed boasts thousands of irises from around the globe.
Irises are a beloved flower in New England and beyond, needing full sun and good drainage to thrive. To ensure their success, soil should remain moist and free from weeds; space iris rhizomes 12-24″ apart to avoid overcrowding; water regularly; if necessary, divide and replant during July/August when dormant.
Every iris has its own label marker that displays its name, hybridizer and year registered with the American Iris Society.
Presby Iris Gardens is the largest public iris garden in America, celebrating both their beauty and long history. It’s a must see for anyone who appreciates flowers!
Iris enthusiasts from around the globe flock to Presby Iris Gardens to witness their beloved flowers in bloom. The garden has long been a haven for local and international photographers, watercolorists, and other creative types.
The gardens are free and open to the public; however, donations are greatly appreciated. A nonprofit citizens committee oversees planting, upkeep and restoration of the irises.
Take your family or group of friends on an enjoyable spring outing to the park where the irises are in peak bloom from early June until early July.
Experience this iconic Montclair garden at its most vibrant, with stunning hill terrain in all seasons of the year. You’re sure to be charmed by its vibrant array of colors and breathtaking panorama.
Essex County owns and operates this stunning historic property, which is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Sites. The Citizens Committee takes care of day-to-day operations at the irises while keeping its gift shop open for visitors.
Presby Iris Gardens, affectionately known by Montclair locals as “rainbow on the hill”, are a must-visit for any visitor to Montclair. Established in 1927 as a tribute to Frank Presby, the garden boasts one of the world’s largest collections of irises.
