Montclair Gardens is one of Montclair’s undiscovered gems, perfect for gardeners or nature enthusiasts alike. Situated in Upper Montclair, this historic site features 30 planting beds that burst with vibrant color every spring for four to six weeks. On those peak bloom days, up to 10,000 visitors visit this well-kept secret each year.
It’s incredible that such a small space can produce so much food, yet Jose German-Gomez, with help from volunteers from his environmental nonprofit Northeast Earth Coalition, has managed to do just that since creating it last March. The vegetable patch near Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Montclair produces around 1,000 pounds of organic sustainably grown produce which is donated to Toni’s Kitchen – an area food pantry.
Montclair Gardens is making a difference in many ways. For instance, German-Gomez and his fellow volunteers have established food giveaway stations around town with small boxes of essential foods that they distribute regularly to those in need; on average they deliver about 1,500 meals each growing season.
Another way the gardens are giving back is through Free Little Pantry, a partnership between Montclair Gardens and Northeast Earth Coalition that has established several food distribution sites near nearby towns. In addition to Crane Park, there are locations in Cedar Grove, East Orange and Hillside as well. Each day volunteers replenish these locations with nutritious ingredients fresh from their farms.
German-Gomez and his fellow gardeners are spearheading an initiative to establish and maintain community gardens at local schools. The ultimate aim is to create a system of educational, sustainable, and ecologically healthy gardens that will benefit students and faculty at Montclair public schools.
The gardens provide an idyllic setting to enjoy nature with family and friends. Their expansive grassy areas, framed by majestic rhododendrons and towering trees, create a haven for picnicking and relaxation.
In this historic garden in New Jersey, you’ll find herbs and flowers from around the world – from peppermint used for soothing upset stomachs to beautiful tulips that bloom in spring. It’s an ideal setting to learn about New Jersey’s gardening heritage as well as imagine what would have grown if gardeners of old had had their way.
